Jack Canterbury, Broker Associate/Owner
Jack Canterbury has been a Broker / Owner at United Country Wapiti Realty Ltd. since 2000. Jackís ancestors on both sides settled in the Colorado Territory in the 1870ís and were involved in farming, ranching and mining. The ranching heritage has remained strong through the generations and Jack has been a large part of that. Spent most of life in ranching Lamar Community College-Farm and Ranch Management Colorado State University-Farm and Ranch course study Owned and Operated Commercial Cattle Business Member or past member; Colorado Independent Cattle Growers, Fremont County Cattleman, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mule Deer Foundation, Outdoor Buddies, Custer County Fair Board, Custer County Extension Advisory Board, Custer County Livestock Sale Committee, Realtors Land Institute, National Association of Realtors, Colorado Association of Realtors, Royal Gorge Association of Realtors, Chaffee County Board of Realtors, United Country Real Estate Recreational Property Subject Matter Expert Married no children, four horses, two cow dogs, one Longhorn cow for a mascot He was raised on a large ranch that pastured and provided care of cattle for several other ranchers. This upbringing instilled in him a great appreciation for the land and its vulnerability to abuse. He takes great pride in being a steward of land and nature. Many of his relative still own and operate ranches and have been recognized for their stewardship and success in the cattle industry. Jack was very active in 4-H where he was a state 4-H officer, participated in state and national livestock judging competitions and won some top honors. His success in livestock judging won him a scholarship to college where he majored in Farm and Ranch Management. After college Jack worked at a Feed Research facility and was involved in testing feed supplements for cattle, designing and building feedlot facilities and managing feed lot crews. The feedlot was a great experience but Jack longed to be back in the saddle and left to work on ranches throughout Colorado and Wyoming. He loved being on his horse or with the cattle and while doing so was constantly studying wildlife habits and how the land reacted to changing conditions. Looking for more income Jack took a Job working for a drilling company where he was trained to core drill for minerals. His work ethic and attention to detail was rewarded with being one of the top drillers in the company, outpacing drillers with much more experience. After working in the mineral exploration field Jack returned to ranching and managed a ranch in central Colorado where he, with only some part time help cared for 450 pair of cross bred cattle. When the owners of the ranch decided that they were getting out of the cattle business Jack took a position managing a Bison ranch in the Colorado mountains. This was quite an experience as Bison donít behave the same as cattle but Jack figured them out fairly quickly and the owners were surprised at how easily Jack could handle the Bison by himself when they were used to needing lots of help. After the Bison ranch Jack met Jean Hockaday a Realtor in Westcliffe Colorado. They were married in 1999 and Jack went to work building homes in the Westcliffe area. Seeing the joy Jean got from helping people find their dream properties Jack decided he wanted to get involved in real estate and they opened Wapiti Realty Ltd. and became a part of United Country shortly thereafter. Jack and Jean started their own herd of Hereford cattle and operated the ranching and real estate business until they decided the cows were taking too much time away from being able to help others. So they sold the cows and concentrated their efforts in helping others with their real estate needs. Jack loves to spend time off with Jean, on horses helping neighbors with ranch work or packing into the high country to camp, fish, hunt, and study nature. He is often asked to share his knowledge of wildlife and the land they inhabit. Many of his friends and family and even some people who have just heard of his knowledge contact him about when or where to hunt, fish, camp or hike. His knowledge of the Colorado hunting license applications keeps him busy answering questions form Mid-February through late March.

Marty Mernitz, Clyde Invites You to Find Your Freedom
In 1987 my husband and I bought property in Westcliffe and built a home three years later. In 1993 we moved to the Valley full-time with our two horses. Three months later we brought home two Aussie puppies, Dundee and Cutter, a couple more horses and our Colorado family started to grow. As my husband retired from his law practice he began a new career breeding and training driving horses and giving visitors a taste of the old West in our Concord stagecoach. I continued to run the financial investment services firm, First Share, Inc., which I had started in Indianapolis. Before starting the firm I had spent 12 years in the real estate business in Florida, as a real estate broker/manager and in real estate lending as a mortgage broker and as an investment advisor for Indiana University Foundation. After the heartbreaking death of our very special Aussie, Dundee, we built a veterinary hospital and boarding kennel for the community and managed it for 9 years. After a year of retirement I missed the daily interaction with the great people in our community. I decided to join United Country Wapiti Realty because there is no better way to give back to the community than to keep it growing by encouraging new people to make their home here. I hope that by sharing my experiences with people who visit that I can help them make a wonderful life in Westcliffe as I have. If you're visiting the Valley for the first time Bonnie & Clyde invite you to come play with them at Dundee's Walkabout Dog Park in Silver Cliff. Call me for details.

Debbra Stoering, Associate Broker
Debbra grew up in Minnesota, the St. Paul area, where hard work and integrity is the standard. She has loved the mountains for as long as she can remember. Shortly after she married her husband, Doug, they moved to Montana, a slice of heaven! Their first son, Matthew, was born and she was a stay at home mom. The best job in the world! Their second son, Kaylan, was born when they lived in Idaho (the mountains of course). She loves to be with my family whether it's hiking, camping, shopping, or just hanging out. She moved to Westcliffe in 2007 when her husband took a maintenance position at Horn Creek Conference Grounds. She joined United Country in 2012. She has always had an interest in homes, from buying to selling. I love to see different houses, it's fascinating how different they all are. I can guarantee that you will be treated with professionalism and receive my utmost care and attention. You will not be looked at as just a client, but treated as a friend. What matters to you will matter to me. Finding the right property should be a joyful experience and I hope to help you find your dream property!
